Social Justice

Social Justice can best be described as a benchmark of measuring comparisons between
different communities revealing disparities that would not be tolerated in one yet encouraged in
another community and advocating for corrective action that will eradicate these differences.
Urban Communities’ poverty issues are often viewed as encompassing a broad spectrum of ills
that are caused by its residents. Under this view Urban poverty can best be eradicated by
focusing on training Urban Community residents to accept lower standards of living while
improving and managing their life in dire circumstances over time. More inferences are placed
on analysis and data collection of negative behaviors and at best the disparity which causes
them yet very little is done to change basic policy that causes these social disparities.
Urban Development Corporation supports targeting actionable steps to remove negative
influences from urban communities and replacing them with positive influences. Bring forth
awareness that why are these negative elements placed in fragile urban communities and not in
more affluent areas. If we envision a place where all ages and races can flourish then we can
not have one area of the city where we encourage a proliferation of negative influences and
another where it is discouraged.
Many Detroiters only feel safe in their homes when their windows and doors are bar-gated. Safe
in their communities only when they don’t venture outside their home. Detroiters struggle to
understand why the vices of life are plentiful in their community but the necessities are scarce.
Positive change in Urban Communities is achieved first by being grounded in empathetic values
and addressing the impact of negative influences on a community.
